God With Us: Knowing the Mystery of Who Jesus Is (Recommendation)
Here is a captivating introduction to who Jesus really is. Admirably displaying his pastoral gifts, Daniel R. Hyde winsomely relates the orthodox doctrine of the person of Christ to the people in the pew. The book is well grounded in Scripture, historically informative, and doctrinally precise. You will walk away from this book understanding the necessity of Jesus’ two natures for our salvation, and praising God for all that He is for us in the glorious person of Christ.

Welcome to a Reformed Church: A Guide for Pilgrims (Recommendation)
Daniel Hyde seeks to explain what Reformed churches believe and why they structure life and worship as they do. Written for laymen rather than scholars, the book sketches the roots of these churches, looks at their basis in Scripture and confession, examines their key beliefs and shows how these beliefs work themselves out in practice. Written by a pastor from the URC and endorsed by quite a long list of Presbyterian and Dutch Reformed pastors and professors, the book is clearly tipped toward Presbyterianism and away from Reformed Baptists. Nevertheless, there is a lot to glean from it for those in either camp.

Grace Worth Fighting For: Recapturing the Vision of God’s Grace in the Canons of Dort (Book Review)
Daniel Hyde’s Grace Worth Fighting For may be the most thorough exposition of the Canons of Dort to date. Through careful exegesis and attention to the historical context, Hyde not only explains what these canons mean but why they are biblically grounded and theologically essential. One of the best features of Hyde’s scholarship is his refusal to detach the doctrines of grace from pastoral ministry and Christian piety. A careful reading of the Canons knows that this marriage between theology and doxology is original to Dort, contrary to common caricatures. Hyde also busts every myth—and there are a lot!—surrounding Dort, removing the centuries of stereotypes to present readers with Calvinism in pure form. This book is indispensable for students of Reformed theology and irresistible to its skeptics.

Thoughts on The Good Confession: An Exploration of the Christian Faith, chapters 1–4:
The Good Confession: Inwoo Lee’s Thoughts on Danny Hyde’s New Membership Class Workbook, Chapter One
At the end of the membership class at the Oceanside URC we are told to memorize the first question of the Heidelberg Catechism, “What is your only comfort in life and in death? … I’ll take this, which summarizes so much in just one question and answer, to my death bed. Amen.
The Good Confession: Hagan Kelly on Hyde’s Membership Workbook, Chapter Two
From start to finish The Good Confession carries the warmth of this tone as Rev. Hyde writes to his friends and congregation. This is a book you don’t read in one sitting: This is a study on the huge happiness and wonder and glory of the Christian faith…Pastor Hyde writes, ‘As Christians, God himself calls us to know him with our minds so that we might know him experientially with our hearts.’ It’s lines such as these that really get my mind buzzing-to ponder what exactly it means to ‘know’ God.
Knowing God in his Word: Hagan Kelly on Danny Hyde’s The Good Confession, ch. 3
The chapter is entitled, ‘Knowing God in His Word.’ That’s good, because I believe Pastor Hyde really does want us, his congregation, to ‘know God in His Word.’ It’s a wonderful thing; and every Lord’s Day for the past few months I’ve had a wonderful ritual. I wake up to the lovely sunshine. I make myself up a nice cup of cowboy plains jet-black coffee (the kind that puts grinds in your teeth!) And I head over to the Oceanside United Reformed Church-which is situated in an old triangular chapel right next to the Pacific Ocean-where I learn theology from the good Reverend Hyde. Our class on this subject of knowing God in His Word was a few months ago now, but I still remember it vividly. As is his practice, Pastor Hyde began the class with a prayer to our Heavenly Father for His guidance. Then, with his usual Cheshire cat grin, he asked his class this question: ‘how does a person know God?” Hmm. The class was silent.
“The Holy Trinity”: Inwoo Lee on Ch. 4 of Hyde’s The Good Confession
It’s a blessing worshipping the Triune God and learning theology at Oceanside United Reformed Church from Pastor Danny Hyde. He knows his stuff. What I mean by that is he knows his Scripture, the Reformed confessions and creeds, and his church history. He’s a Reformed pastor — he better! Like a good surgeon, he better be good with the scalpel, if you know what I mean. The thing about Pastor Hyde that I appreciate is that he cares about and loves doctrine and likes teaching it. So when he’s teaching he guides us in Scripture, and summarizes and articulates a particular truth through the creeds and confessions, and answers any questions. And from time to time he would crack a little joke with his “Chesire cat grin” (see Hagan’s last post); the funny thing is he’d be the only one laughing at the joke he delivered, while we would sit there trying to comprehend what just happened.

“As far as contemporary defenses of the Reformed doctrine and practice of infant baptism are concerned, Daniel Hyde’s little book [Jesus Loves the Little Children: Why We Baptize Infants] is the best. His book is particularly helpful for those coming out of a Baptist background into a Reformed church.

How Is the Trinity Vital for My Christian Life?
Hyde on God’s Media (Carl Trueman Recommendation on In Living Color: Image of Christ and the Means of Grace)
…a fine exposition of the Second Commandment…biblical, confessional, irenic, pastoral, and designed to help laypeople think more clearly about issues that matter…The chapter on preaching is worth the price of the book in itself. At last, we have someone who understands that preaching is not simply informational communication but rather prophetic declaration.
Worth reading… (Todd Pruit Recommendation of Jesus Loves the Little Children: What We Baptize Children)
This is an excellent little primer on the subject of covenant baptism. It is readable and pastoral.

In Defense of the Descent by Daniel R. Hyde (Book Review)
Wow. Hyde crammed a lot of history and theology (and history of theology) into these 74 pages! This book could’ve easily been another 50 pages longer if he’d taken the time to fully flesh out some of these points. But the book isn’t lacking because he didn’t do that — not at all. It’s just concentrated, a double shot of espresso instead of the grande drip it could have been.
