Polity: How We’re Governed
Church Order
In a historic Christian and Reformed church, we are related to other churches in a federation (aka, “denomination”). As a member of a federation, we declare complete subjection and obedience to the Word of God. The Word teaches that Jesus Christ is the supreme and only Head of the Church. He exercises this headship by his Word and Spirit through God-ordained officers (see below) to ensure purity of doctrine and holiness of life. We voluntarily display unity with these other churches by using a common “church order” that enables us to cooperate and exercise mutual concern for one another. In other words, we’re not alone as a congregation, and you won’t be alone as part of our church family.
Church Government
At OURC, we believe that God gifts his church with leadership as a vital means of guiding and nurturing his people (Rom. 12:3–8; 1 Cor. 12:1–31; Eph. 4:1–16).
Our church government is structured with three “offices” and three “assemblies.” We have a particularly Dutch Reformed version of Presbyterian polity in which each local consistory is autonomous and is the highest authority for that congregation. Every officer is nominated and elected by the congregation. Yet through our classes (plural of “classis” below) and Synod, we cooperate. Hence we can be called “synodical.”
The offices of the church are pastors/ministers (clergy) along with elders and deacons (both laity).
Our pastor has been trained, called, and ordained (set apart) as a minister of the Word and Sacraments. His chief duties are prayer for and with the congregation, teaching and preaching the Word publicly and privately, catechizing (instructing) our youth, administering baptism and communion, and assisting the elders in the shepherding and discipline. Meet Pastor Danny.
Our elders are called to oversee the spiritual health of the congregation. They shepherd the congregation through prayer, encouragement, and visiting the flock to help each believer grow in their relationship with Christ (Acts 20:17–38, 1 Peter 5:1–4). They also ensure faithfulness and purity of doctrine according to Scripture, promote evangelism and mission work, help parents with God-centered schooling for their children, and exercise discipline—both discipling believers and restoring fallen believers with the gospel. Meet our Elders.
Our deacons serve by the practical needs within the church and community, ensuring that no one is overlooked and that God’s love is made visible through acts of service. Thus we often call them “ministers of mercy,” since they not only serve tangible needs, but do so with encouragement from the Word and with prayer. They also gather and manage offerings, ensuring that the church’s resources are distributed with care and accountability. Through their care, we are stirred up to love and good works so that we all grow in faith and love, living out our calling as a loving church family. Meet our Deacons.
The assemblies of the church are the local consistory (pastor and elders), regional classis (neighboring churches), and national/international Synod (all churches within the federation).
Our consistory meets monthly to pray for the congregation and discuss how best to shepherd the flock under our care.
Our classis meets twice a year to deal with issues of common concern, such as examinations of candidates for the ministry and advising one another on best pastoral practices in cases of discipline.
Our national/international Synod meets at least every three years to deal with common causes such as foreign missions, study reports that benefit all the churches, and pastoral consideration of appeals of church discipline within the various classes (plural of classis).

Our Elders
George Barton
George and his wife Paula have been part of OURC since its first days as a church plant in 2000…two of our OG members! George has served as a deacon and now elder while being one of our regular musicians on guitar and piano. His wife, Paula, teaches Sunday School for our littlest ones. They both love to show hospitality by hosting lunches after Sunday services as well as opening their home in South Oceanside for Bible studies.
Dennis Hanson
Dennis is a native of the South Bay of Los Angeles and a lifelong Dodgers fan. He and his wife Jeanie met in Long Beach and have been married ever since for forty-five years. After a lengthy career as a teacher and administrator in the Los Angeles School District, the Hansons enjoy time with their daughter and three granddaughters as well as riding a Russian Ural motorcycle side car for recreation.
Danny Miranda
Danny and his wife Donna are true Southern Californians. Danny was born in Oceanside and Donna moved to SoCal when she was one. They raised their three children in North County and have been a part of OURC since 2004. Danny is retired after a career in the San Diego Fire Department and Donna is still working on Camp Pendleton. The Mirandas enjoy having people in their home, whether for lunch after church, bible studies, or prayer meetings. They share a desire to see God work in the church and in the lives of other believers.
Duncan Lule
Duncan and his wife Vivian have been a part of OURC since 2012, when they were married by Pastor Danny. Along with their four children, they reside in Carlsbad. Duncan graduated with a dual B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from the University of California, San Diego, and also earned an M.B.A. from the University of Redlands. He currently works as a Land Surveying Assistant for the City of San Diego. Vivian is a homeschool mom. They both serve in many ways among the saints here and would love to welcome you.
Our Deacons
Graydon Dill
Graydon and his wife, Erin, were married in 2009 and have lived in Vista since 2012, where their three daughters were born. They have been part of the OURC family since 2019. Graydon works as the program director for a local habitat restoration company based in Oceanside, where he enjoys getting to improve the local habitat of the many different and beautiful SoCal vegetation communities. He loves taking his girls on hikes, teaching them about the local plants, sailing in the Oceanside harbor, and going to Padres. They couldn’t be happier to have finally found a church home so committed to the faithful preaching of Christ’s Gospel.
Jon Kahelin
Jon was born in Bremerton, Washington, and then raised in sunny San Diego, graduating from San Marcos High (class of 1999!). He lives in Oceanside and has worked in the community at Costco Wholesale since 1999. His hobbies are movies, music, and reading. While Jon grew up going to church with his family at a non-denominational church, it wasn’t until 2005 at a Calvary Chapel that God saved him. As he learned more about the historic Protestant Reformation, he became a member at a local sister church of Grace Community Church. Later, he found his way to a Reformed Baptist church before finding OURC, where Jon would love to welcome and serve you.
Leroy Gomez
Leroy and Catherine were married in 1982 and have two grown sons. They’ve lived in North County since 1985 and have been members of OURC since 2020. Leroy and Catherine are both retired, but very active. They appreciate being part of a God- and family-centered congregation that seeks to make Christ the center of all we say and do as examples of His love and grace to others. God has been good and a refuge through the trials and joys of living, and they desire that all would know Christ through his gospel. They would love to meet you at Sunday service or one of OURC’s afternoon hospitality gatherings.
Nathan Serna
Nathan and his wife Marcela have been married since 2015. Along with their two children, they moved from L.A. to Oceanside and have been members of OURC since 2020. Nathan works for a local utility company, but his greatest joy is sharing the Gospel and serving the community. As a family, they enjoy hosting fellowship lunches, traveling, and staying active with sports like “fútbol” and jiu-jitsu. God has done amazing work in their lives, and they look forward to meeting you this Sunday at OURC.
Danny Nguyen
Danny was called to a life in Christ back in 2010. Since 2020, he and his wife, Kim, along with their two daughters, have been members of OURC. They count it a privilege to practice acts of service in whatever ways the Lord directs. Danny enjoys his work, operating complex machinery in the water industry. In his spare time, Danny likes to train in martial arts and be outdoors with his wife and daughters—camping, hiking, swimming, skiing, or catching waves, seeking to behold the greatness of creation.
