Rev. Daniel R. Hyde—“Pastor Danny” to the members of OURC—is a SoCal native and has an eclectic past. He was born in Long Beach and baptized in the Roman Catholic Church. He spent his early childhood in Cypress, during which time his father was converted through Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa. After moving to Redondo Beach and experiencing a broken family, he was invited to Hope Chapel Hermosa Beach (Foursquare Church) when he was 17 and was converted. After graduating from Redondo Union High School he attended Southern California College/Vanguard University (Assemblies of God) on a basketball scholarship. It was during this time that he became disillusioned as a believer leading him on a two-year journey exploring Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism as well as the cults such as Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses. All the while he youth pastored at a non-denominational Pentecostal church. Pastor Danny discovered the riches of the historic Protestant and Reformed Christian faith after meeting a classmate who introduced him to The White Horse Inn radio broadcast and through a theology professor, who started giving him books by Luther, Calvin, and others.
Origins of OURC
All of this prepared him to minister in the diverse religious culture of Southern California. After graduating from SCC in 1997, Pastor Danny attended Westminster Seminary California. With an inner call that he could be of use to people like him who grew up in SoCal and who needed the truth of the whole counsel of God, the idea of a Reformed church on the coast somewhere in SoCal began. While still in seminary, in 2000, he planted the Oceanside United Reformed Church under the oversight of the Escondido URC and Classis Southwest U.S. of the United Reformed Churches in North America).
He is married to Karajean, who serves as Director of the Irvine Math Project, and they have four children: Cyprian, Caiden, Daxton, and Sadie. Together they enjoy showing hospitality in their home for meals, prayer, and to study the Word.
Pastor Danny has a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Vanguard University, Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Westminster Seminary California, and a Master of Theology (Th.M.) from Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. His Th.M. thesis was entitled, “Of Great Importance and of High Concernment: The Liturgical Theology of John Owen (1616-1683),” and was read by Drs. Joel Beeke, Derek W. H. Thomas, and Mark Jones. He is currently writing his PhD dissertation through the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. You may view his Curriculum Vitae here.
He has written numerous books to help people of all backgrounds grow in the knowledge of Christ, including God in Our Midst (Reformation Trust Publishing, 2012), Welcome to a Reformed Church (Reformation Trust Publishing, 2010), Why Believe in God (P & R Publishing, 2011) and Jesus Loves the Little Children (Reformed Fellowship, Inc., 2006).
